Entrance to the Roman necropolis under Tarragona

Tarraco Depths

The stone absorbs the voice of the living. Sometimes, it returns it.

Concept

The echo of the forgotten

«Under ancient Tarraco, every gallery is a stratum of time. The stones are not mute, they are acoustic archives of everything that happened between them.»

1987. Oleguer, an archivist at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, receives a routine assignment: to document the expansion of a collapsed gallery under the Early Christian necropolis of Tarragona. What he finds beneath the first layers of sediment is anything but routine.

As he descends, the architecture changes. Visigothic tombs give way to Imperial Roman crypts, which in turn flow into Iberian cavities carved into the raw rock, predating the foundation of Tarraco itself.

And in total darkness, his field recorder captures sounds that should not exist. Voices praying in Latin. Metal scraping stone. A weeping that reverberates in frequencies that the limestone should not be able to preserve.

Mechanics

What awaits you

I

Topographic Acoustic System

Sound bounces, absorbs, and deforms according to the geometry of each gallery. Each cavity has its acoustic signature. You will learn to interpret reverberation to orient yourself... until the echoes begin to contradict the architecture.

II

Manual Cartography

No minimaps. No GPS. Oleguer carries a field notebook, a compass, and an analog distance meter. Every documented crossroads is a lifeline. Every calculation error, a possible point of no return.

III

Perceptual Degradation

Continued exposure to darkness and acoustic dissonance deteriorates Oleguer’s perception. Visual shaders respond to your silent stress level: flickering walls, shadows suggesting shapes, distances that lie.

IV

Deliberate Pacing

80s analog equipment. Slow and heavy movement. Managing flashlight batteries, recording tape, and chalk for marking walls is not a crafting system: it is the difference between returning or not.
